This is how you add coping
What You'll Need
- 2" hollow steel pipe
- 1/4" hooked bolts (concrete bolts) with nuts and washers
- Drill and bit
Build a shelf
This is the most important part in adding a coping. First you need to cut out a notch out of the curve. The notch should be 1.5" x 1.5" if you are using 2 layers of 3/8" plywood to finish your ramp. I've shown the layout of the 2x4's in the picture below.
*If you aren't using two layers of 3/8" plywood on your ramp, simply add or subtract the the thickness to the notch accordingly. Example: Only using one layer of 3/8" plywood --> 1 1/2" - 3/8" = 1 1/8" --> Which means the notch should be 1 1/8" x 1 1/8"
Drill holes for your bolts
The coping will be attached to your ramp by 3/8" hooked bolts (seen in photo below). There are many different kinds of bolts that will work, but the ones in the photo below will work for sure, as long as they are long enough. Now you will need to drill the holes that the bolts will go through. There should be one hole every 6-8 feet to ensure strength, and each hole should be drilled 1/2" in diameter (bigger than bolt diameter) just in case your hole isn't in the exact spot.
Attaching the bolts
You should now drill corresponding holes in the pipe to line up with the ones in the ramp. These holes should also be 1/2" in diameter. To attach the bolts, simply fish the hooked end of the bolt through the hole in the pipe, and turn in slightly so it doesn't come back out. Now put the bolts through the holes in the ramp and put on the washers and tighten the nuts.
